Why it’s interesting
No Docker, no database server, no config files. Just ./pocketbase serve and you’re running. This lines up perfectly with the no-daemon philosophy — one static binary, nothing else to manage.
SQLite-native — the same storage pattern as Vestige, agmsg, and other tools in the stack. That means Syncthing-friendly, portable, and trivially backuppable.
Real-time SSE built in — no polling needed for agent workflows. Subscribe to collections and get push updates when data changes.
Auth is first-class — OAuth2, email/password, and admin accounts are all baked in. No separate auth service to deploy.
Potential use cases
- Agent handoff storage — shared message board between multiple agents via REST API
- Kanban backend replacement — real-time updates, auth, built-in admin UI
- Lightweight CMS — drop-in backend for static sites that need dynamic features
- File store — receive and serve agent-generated files
Verdict
PocketBase is the “just in case” tool for the toolbelt. When you need a quick backend with auth, real-time subscriptions, and an admin UI, it’s faster to deploy than anything else. Single binary, zero config, and a massive community.
